On Monday
evening we went over to the Clipper Liberty and we were signed in with about 30
other guests. It looked like a beautiful evening and we were all getting to know
each other. The Captain came over to get us and… wait a minute… what is this
announcement he’s making? We won’t be going out because of lightening that is
about 20-miles away.
He explains that the ship has a steel hull and that we depend on the wind for
power and speed. It’s just not safe to sail if there is a chance that we could
get offshore and be subject to a lightening storm. We are all told that we can
get a refund or we could return the following evening. We thanked them for
caring for our safety and tell them we will return the following day.
As it ended up the skies cleared and we could have sailed. I admired them for
being willing to lose the business and error on the side of safety. We went back
on Tuesday and the sail was magnificent.
This ship is an
80' replica of an old clipper ship. It runs off of the wind that blows through
the massive sails. It is a smooth quiet ride and it was wonderful. I felt my
blood pressure going down the entire time I was on the ship.
The crew was a group of 25-40 year old gentlemen who were friendly, yet very
professional in their duties. They served wine, champagne, and beer through out
the sail. Fun music played and God did the rest by providing us with strong
winds and a pretty sunset.
Taking the ship's wheel was fun, but notice that the captain never left my side!
That was because of all of the sailing experience I didn't have.

We'll be married 29-years next month and Joni is just as beautiful as she was the day we got married! Sailing agrees with her as the sunsets behind her and the wind blows through her hair. Who know, maybe we should retire on a sail boat someday!?! I wonder if I have any friends who can teach me how to sail?

The Sunsets was beautiful that evening. Key West is an expensive city to visit but the best attraction of them all is free! You jut can't put a value on seeing sunsets as beautiful as these, and seeing it from the water was priceless!
